2-month-old upper lip-tie and tongue-tie release: one week review

This bub had a history of tongue tie snip. However, there were some ongoing concerns with poor latch, swallowing of air, frequent feeds, and exhaustion at the breast. Our lactation consultant colleague identified stridor, upper lip-tie and tongue-tie requiring further release.

Bub was also seen by an ENT colleague who diagnosed laryngomalacia and reflux after video-scoping the airway, prescribed reflux medication, suggested to seek release of ties, and to return for review with her in four weeks.

One week post release mum reported

• A much happier baby – more smiles and babbling
• Head turn to left side resolved within a day
• Laryngomalacia has reduced significantly – mainly limited to letdown
• More peaceful feeding – not pulling on and off, reduced air intake
• Reduced reflux-like symptoms – not as windy, reduced vomiting
• Sleeps more soundly
• Not as reliant on the dummy, tends to spit it out more

I look forward to hearing more on their progress following their 4-week ENT review.

8-month-old – one week review post upper lip and tongue tie release

It’s fascinating to see the subtle influence the muscles of the mouth and face have on a child’s facial development and appearance over the years, or sometimes even sooner.

This young man had a long history of feeding issues, but ties had been dismissed as mild by several medical and child health professionals.

More recently the family came to see us for a further opinion as they felt something was not quite right. He was posturing his lower jaw forward all the time, and he was struggling to swallow solids.

We confirmed upper lip and tongue tie and proceeded with release.

One week post release, he was feeding better on the breast and swallowing solids easier.

Mum feels his face is more relaxed and she reports he is no longer posturing his lower jaw forward. These photos before (left) and one week after (right) upper lip and tongue tie release tend to support her observations.

When I first met this bub, her parents shared she was born screaming and still hadn’t stopped.

She was swallowing air, had wind and reflux like symptoms, and had been prescribed Losec which wasn’t helping. Their child health nurse had suggested Gaviscon.

Fast forward to her one week review post tongue tie release today – mum described she was happier, more comfortable and relaxed, laughing, and her own parents had remarked they would not have believed the change if they weren’t staying with them and seen it for themselves.

So glad for this bub, and to be able to help her parents and extended family enjoy bonding with her!

Upper lip and tongue tie release for 6 week old – one week review

It is always super-rewarding to hear parents report they have a different and happier baby, that they can start enjoying!

• Changes reported include:
  More efficient feeding and drainage – down from 60 to 20 minutes
• Less air swallowing and choking during feeds
• Less vomits after feeds and not crying
• Sleeping longer
• Greater tongue mobility
• Couldn’t move upper lip before but now she can smile
• Less body tension – can feed on both sides, and more comfortable with tummy time

Tongue tie release for 3.5 month old – one week review

This bub was having troubles sleeping and mum sought help from occupational therapist and sleep consultant Natasha from Sound Asleep Baby

Before sleep training was considered, Natasha wanted to rule out any underlying breathing and feeding issues that could be contributing to this issue and referred her to both an ENT specialist and myself.

The ENT assessment was that reflux could be contributing to congestion.

With the support of Brenda from the The Gentle Village we proceeded with tongue tie release and at the one week review today mum reported

• Feeding is enjoyable – nipple not set on fire every time she feeds
• Reduced air swallowing
• Less vomiting
• Bub is more comfortable all around
• No more bottles
• Immediately post release went from 2-3 hours to 4-5 hours of sleep per night

So far there has been no significant change in congestion but that will be further reviewed in the near future with the ENT.

The great thing here, is that an astute sleep consultant was able to help put different pieces of the puzzle to not only improve sleep but help feeding become more comfortable and manageable for both mum and bub in the process.

1 week review – post upper lip tie and tongue tie release (7 week old)

Her parents report:

• Less air swallowing – use to burp, scream and throw up all she had taken
• Still some vomits but overall a significant reduction of gassiness, colic and reflux symptoms
• Calmer during feeding, doesn’t scream after feed, can be laid down flat
• Has not required top ups with the bottle
• Able to hold head better during tummy time
• Within two days a completely different baby- more settled, happy and pleasant to be around

One week review post upper lip and tongue tie release (7 week old)

Initial concerns

• Falls asleep during feed, wakes and is constantly hungry
• Gagging and choking during feed followed by projectile vomit
• Poor drainage – full and lumpy breasts
• Painful feeding and nipple trauma – describes nipples as being on fire
• Taking a toll on the entire family

One week review

• Sucking is good, no vomiting, burping better
• Feels more confident about putting her down after feeds – before would power chuck and forcefully come out through nose
• Goes back to sleep after feeds instead of waking every 1-2 hours
• Stays attached, not having to keep putting breast in
• No longer in agony – not having to contend with stabbing pain from bra rubbing on her every time she walks
• Mum reports life is a hell of a lot easier and it’s been an amazing difference
